Core Principles

Rules of Firearms Safety

Mastery begins with respect. These fundamentals rules are not suggestions; They are absolute baseline for handling any firearm, ensuring safety of yourself and those around you.

The 4 Universal Rules

Memorize them. Live by them. There are no exceptions.

1

Treat every firearm as is if it was loaded.

Never assume a gun is empty, even if you just checked it, or someone handed it to you and said it was clear, verify it yourself. Treat it with the respect a loaded gun commands at all times.

2

Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

A “safe direction” means that if the gun were to discharge, it would not cause injury or unintended damage. Be acutely aware of where the barrel is pointing, regardless of whether you are holding it, carrying it, or setting it down.

3

Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to fire.

Rest your index finger straight along the frame of the firearm (the “register” position) until the moment you are ready to shoot. This prevents negligent discharges caused by startling, stumbling, or involuntary muscle contractions.

4

Be sure of your target and what is beyond it

Bullets can pass through targets, walls, and other obstacles. You are accountable for every round you fire. Identify your target positively, and ensure there is a safe backstop to capture the projectile.

Secondary Safety Essentials

Beyond the core rules, these practices define the modern responsibilities.

Safe Storage at Home

Security is an active process. Preventing unauthorized access—especially by children or untrained individuals—is a legal and moral obligation for every gun owner.

Secure Containers

Use dedicated gun safes, lockboxes or heavy-duty cabinets. Hiding is not securing.

Ammunition Separation

Store Ammunition in a separated, locked container away from the firearm.

Store weapon so it is not accessible to unauthorized users

Store your gun safely to keep it out of reach to unauthorized users.
